Mayer studied music theory at Berklee School of Music, but he and his friend left after two semesters. The two opted to relocate to Atlanta and started playing as the collective Lo-fi Masters at smaller festivals. Mayer began building an online audience with the advent of the internet. He was signed to Aware Records after putting on a great show at an SXSW music event in 2000.
